The bulk of Somaliland's exports are of livestock, which has been estimated to be at 24 million. In 1996, 3 million heads of livestock were exported to the Middle East. In February 1998, this export was negatively impacted by a Saudi Arabian ban on imports of beef. The ban was eventually lifted on December, 2006, and ... allowed the industry to recover. Other exports include hides, skins, myrrh, and frankincense.

To remedy this problem, the Danish Demining Group (DDG), under contract to the Survey Action Center (SAC), began a comprehensive Landmine Impact Survey throughout Somaliland on 23 March 2002. The survey was completed in March 2003. The final report is expected in July 2003. Three hundred and fifty-seven impact surveys were conducted in Awdal, Galbeed, Togdheer, Sahil and parts of Sanag. Eastern Sanag and Sool were not surveyed due to security considerations. Survey teams visited 563 communities and identified 357 affected ones, of which 45 were high impact, 102 were medium impact and 210 were low impact communities.[13]

Inland from the coast, elevation climbs rapidly as the Guban gives way to the Oogo: the cooler highland zone dominated by the Gollis mountain range, which crosses Somaliland from west to east. The Oogo zone possesses an abundant supply of underground water, which together with its agreeable climate has encouraged settlement and development. The Oogo is home to all of Somaliland’s major towns and supports a degree of cultivation, notably between Hargeysa and Boorame in the west, and around Ceerigaabo in the east.
