- Total Eclipse (Eclipses, Occultations and Transit) -- Total Solar Eclipses
A total eclipse of the Sun is due in August 1999. It will attract alot of interest because - unusually - it will be visible in much of Europe and the UK. A total Solar Eclipse is always fascinating. This book is for everyone that wants to know 1. What a Solar Eclipse is 2. The phenomena one can expect to see 3. How to photograph an eclipse using a variety of methods 4. - Thales -- Eclipses
The dates of Thales' life are not known precisely. There are two traditions: one that he lived to be about 90, and the other, about 80. The time of his life is roughly established by a few dateable events mentioned in the sources and an estimate of his length of life. According to Herodotus (1.74) Thales predicted a solar eclipse, which has been determined by modern methods to have been on May 28, 585 BC. Pliny's (Natural History 2.53) places it in 584. - Solar System
The planets, asteroids and comets in the Solar System are loose particles left over from the formation of the Sun. Originally the gas and dust which would become the Sun was the core of a cloud much larger than the Solar System, probably several lightyears(far far away) across; where 1 light-year is equal to approximately 10,000,000,000,000 miles. The core was slowly rotating at first, but as it collapsed it spun faster, like a spinning ice-skater pulling in their arms. The rotation prevented the core's equator from collapsing as fast as the poles, so the core became a spinning disc. - Total Eclipse (Eclipses, Occultations and Transit) -- Total Eclipse Of The Moon
A total eclipse of the Moon takes place on the evening of Tuesday 28 August. The Moon starts moving into the Earth's shadow at 6:51 pm Eastern Standard Time (EST) and is full immersed in the shadow at 7:52 pm. Totality is over at 9:23 pm and the eclipse ends at 10:24 pm. For people in the eastern half of Australia the whole eclipse is visible while for people in the west the eclipse starts with the rising of the partially eclipsed moon. People in the westernmost parts of Western Australia have the dramatic sight of the reddened totally eclipsed Moon at moonrise. - Total Eclipse (Eclipses, Occultations and Transit) -- Total Lunar Eclipses
All observations of the Total Lunar Eclipse that are received from Astronomy On-Line Groups will be compared by the EAAE European Student Project Group. Some days later, they will be published in a joint article with tables in the Astronomy On-Line Newspaper, together with an evaluation of the results. Remember, your Group and your results will ... be mentioned here, if you send in the measurements. - Total Eclipse (Eclipses, Occultations and Transit) -- Moon
A total eclipse of the sun cannot be compared to any other natural phenomenon. Many of those who remember having seen eclipses have actually seen only partial eclipses of the sun and, to paraphrase Mark Twain, the difference between a total solar eclipse and a partial solar eclipse is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug. A total eclipse begins and ends with a partial eclipse. Beginning at 12:50 p.m. the Moon began to gradually cover the sun. During the partial phase, the increasing darkness caused some birds that had stowed away, to begin flying about the decks, as if preparing for the oncoming darkness. - Total Eclipse (Eclipses, Occultations and Transit) -- Totality
[One] layer of the sun’s atmosphere visible during a total eclipse is the chromosphere. It lies between the photosphere and the corona. Invisible in full daylight, the chromosphere appears as a thin red arc for a few seconds at the beginning and near the end of totality. From the chromosphere are seen red flame-like structures called prominences. These arcs of fluorescing hydrogen gas follow field lines which usually propagate from magnetically active regions in the photosphere, where sunspots can often be found. Larger prominences, such as the ones seen during the July 1991 total solar eclipse, can be viewed with the unaided eye, but here ... binocular and telescopic views will enhance the enjoyment. - Total Eclipse (Eclipses, Occultations and Transit) -- Earths
When the Moon's shadow hits the Earth and the Moon is close to the Earth, then a Total eclipse is visible along the narrow path of Totality. (A Partial eclipse occurs on either side of the path of Totality). For a Total eclipse, the Moon can appear to be as much as 6.5% larger than the Sun. The maximum duration of Totality is 7m 31s. Eclipses over seven minutes long are rare; only three occurred during the 20th Century and none are expected in the 21st Century. Longer eclipses tend to occur nearer the tropics. - Total Eclipse (Movie)
Directed by Agnieszka Holland (Europa, Europa, The Secret Garden), Total Eclipse begins in 1870 when the newly married Verlaine is 24 and Rimbaud is 17. The volatile combination of their reckless passions, idiosyncratic talents, and obnoxious egos is a recipe for disaster--and l'amour fou--culminating in a two-year prison term for Verlaine who was convicted of sodomy. DiCaprio's work in this film (as well as This Boy's Life, What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, and The Basketball Diaries) proves he is a serious actor who's interested in risky, challenging work--not just the matinee idol he became in the wake of Titanic. --Jim Emerson, Amazon.com - Sun (Solar System)
A partial solar eclipse isn’t nearly as spectacular as a total solar eclipse when the Sun is completely covered for a few minutes. Nevertheless, it’s still an amazing sight to behold – ... sight is the thing to beware of as any attempt to look at the Sun with binoculars or a telescope (or even the naked eye) can result in blindness. The Gisborne Astronomical Society is opening the Cook Observatory on Kaiti Hill from 4:45pm this Thursday to show people how to view the event safely.
