Solar Deity: Surya Academy
built 639 days ago
In the Vedas, polymorphically speaking, Visnu is considered a solar deity belonging to Aditi (ruler of the heavens). All the solar deities, including Savitar (or Surya), are associated with the solar disc (representing the sun or sol) which is used in exercising their power. Sun and its energy generate and enhance life on earth. The sunlight removes fear and danger of night from all creatures. Symbolically, it is equivalent to the deity cutting the darkness (night) using his Sudershan-chakra (solar disc) and ... giving solace and confidence to the world. In other words, solar deities (including Visnu) basically are also the life’s maintainers and enhancers on earth, and they generally carry the Sudershan-chakra (or the celestial disc) associated with the sun or sol (which is the most potent force in heavens).

The Hindu solar deity Surya is generally represented as a regal figure with a crown, holding two lotus blossoms in his upraised hands. He has a prominent halo decorated with a bead motif, geometric patterns and flames, as do his two attendants. Dandi, on Surya's left, is the god's measurer, while Pingala, on his right, is the recorder who writes down mankind's good and bad deeds. Surya's crowned head is set off by a large, plain halo that manifests his solar affiliation.

In the Vedas, numerous hymns are dedicated to Surya deva, the Sun personified, and Savitar, "the impeller", a solar deity either identified with or associated with Surya. Even the Gayatri mantra, which is regarded as one of the most sacred of the Hindu hymns is dedicated to the Sun. The Adityas are a group of solar deities, from the Brahmana period numbering twelve. The ritual of sandhyavandanam, performed by some Hindus, is meant to worship the sun.
In Hinduism, Surya is the chief solar deity, son of Dyaus Pita or Indra. He has hair and arms of gold. His chariot is pulled by seven horses, which represent the seven colors of rainbow. Tvashtri is his son, as are the twins Yama and Yami and the Asvins (by Saranya).Another name ... used in vedic astrology is Ravi.
