Socks primarily began as animal skins worn over the feet and secured around the ankles with a piece of string. Later on, socks were made out of leather skins, soft fabrics, and were even created out of matted animal hair. Knitted socks followed shortly thereafter, but it took a long time to produce one pair as they were only made by hand. The invention of the knitting machine in 1589 made socks much easier and much cheaper to manufacture... allowing socks to be produced in bulk and in many different lengths, various fabrics, colorful patterns, and bright colors. These different designs made socks very popular and it eventually became an essential and indispensable article of clothing.
