Social Security Office: Social Security Numbers
built 634 days ago
All foreign students must have a Social Security number for employment either on-campus or off-campus. You may be able to use your Social Security card as one of the necessary forms of identification required on the Employment Eligibility Verification Form (Form I-9), if the card does not have the notation "Not Valid for Employment." The regular appointment form you fill out when you start a new job at the University requires you to indicate your immigration status (F-1, J-1). The Payroll Office uses this information to determine deductions. These forms are available at the University Payroll Office at Virginia Tech if your employer does not have one.

The Social Security Administration requires that their offices do an additional document verification process involving the USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) for all J1 participants applying for a Social Security Number. This verification is on a "tier" system, and will allow your card to get to you faster.

Individuals in F-2, H-4, TD, or O-3 status will not be issued Social Security numbers.F-1 students who are not working on or off campus are ... not eligible for a U.S. SSN. PLEASE NOTE: ineligibility includes F-1 students who already have an SSN but no longer possess the card. Unless the F-1 student has on- or off-campus employment, the student cannot apply for a replacement card. For tax form filing purposes, these individuals will need to apply for Individual Taxpayer ID Numbers (ITINs), issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). You may access the following Website to download the ITIN application form and instructions (form W-7):http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw7.pdf.

A social Security number can be useful to a foreign student as a major source of identification. For example, if you write a check to pay for a bill (such as in a grocery store), you may be able to use the Social Security number as identification.

Previously, claims work had been distributed to claims processing units based on the first three digits of the social security number. The first three digits of a person's social security number identify the specific geographic location where the number was acquired. Clogs in the workload pipeline frequently occur when population shifts cause workload imbalances, as had been the case at the Richmond office.

Social Security numbers are generally assigned to people who are authorized to work in the United States. Social Security numbers are used to report your wages to the government and to determine eligibility for Social Security benefits.  Due to changes in federal regulations, you must have a valid offer of employment in order to be eligible for a US Social Security number.
