A Social Security number (SSN) is a permanent nine-digit identification number/card issued by the United States government. It is used primarily for taxing income in order to provide retirement and medical benefits. For tax purposes, anyone receiving income must provide their US employer with a social security number. Recent changes in Social Security Administration regulations have restricted the issuing of SSNs to certain foreign student categories. F-1 students must have a job and be currently working in order to apply for a SSN. An application with a future start date will not be accepted.

Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, announced this week that the agency has begun making offers to 144 of the 175 new Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) it will hire this fiscal year. Due to litigation and budget cuts, the agency has about ten percent fewer ALJs than it did a decade ago. During that same time, the number of cases waiting for a hearing decision has more than doubled. Here is the complete press release from the Social Security Administration:

The report includes the 1,000 most common names for each sex. The [Popular Baby Names] page on the SSA website provides the complete list and allows searches for past years and particular names.[11]

The Social Security Administration started in the 1930s as a result of the Great Depression although few people are familiar with that history. The agency's purpose then, as now, is to help provide the nation's citizens with economic security during rough times. Although the commissioner of the Social Security Administration and many of its employees work at the administration headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland, the SSA has more than 1,300 offices nationwide.
