Social Security Office: People
built 634 days ago
Recognizing that Congress would not pursue the proposals he offered in 2005, the President has encouraged those with other ideas for strengthening Social Security to offer them for discussion. Ultimately, any reform plan will require bipartisan support and the support of the American people. Congress must move carefully and deliberatively on any proposals affecting Social Security, but it must move soon.

Preparing for retirement can be a priority for some people, while others don't really care about securing their old age - instead, they'll just rely on social security to protect them (after all, what are social security taxes for?). Thinking about your old age benefits can be a chore at this time, but in the long run, this would greatly affect the quality of life you're leading. So it really doesn't hurt to plan ahead; in fact, it proves to be helpful.
People who have been denied Social Security disability benefits are often bewildered. They have grown used to being told by friends and loved ones (and sometimes even their doctors or lawyers) that they "look too good" to be awarded Social Security disability.
The problem in essence is not that the Social Security Administration provides this assistance to people who need it. The concern is over how the administration is funded. There is little doubt from the discussions among politicians that the SSA and its funding are approaching a breaking point, and that as the population ages, administration will continue to be a hot-button political topic.
There are fewer people working at the Social Security Administration today than there were during the Ford administration. But the number of applicants claiming a disability has doubled since 2001 and is growing so rapidly that it is estimated that the backlogs of people waiting more than a year will bloat to 1 million by 2010.
