Social Security recipients should be on guard against potential scams, according to the Social Security office in downtown Detroit. There have been numerous reports of telephone calls or visits from people posing as Social Security employees trying to obtain personal information, such as Social Security or bank account numbers, from victims. The agency recommends people take precautions when giving out personal information over the phone. People should give out information only if they initiated the contact or are sure of the person they're speaking to. People should not release information if they are in doubt of the legitimacy of the call. To verify a call, contact (800) 772-1213.
