The Social Security Administration (SSA) maintains a Death Master File, which is a record of approximately 70 million deaths that were reported to SSA. Although this Death Master File is not available online from SSA, the Death Master File Extract of this information is available for sale [on either CD-ROM, 3480/3490 cartridge, magnetic tape, or electronic download] through our distributor, the United States Department of Commerce’s National Technical Information Service (NTIS). In 1934 President Franklin Roosevelt created a Committee on Economic Security to draft a program of guaranteed social support for all U.S. citizens who were economically vulnerable during the Great Depression of the 1930s. In part, Roosevelt was responding to several radical proposals designed to stimulate the economy. One proposal would have distributed $200 per month to every aged family with the requirement that the money be spent during that month. In early 1935 the committee submitted its Economic Security Bill to the Congress of the United States. Congress subsequently changed the name of the bill to Social Security and approved it by the middle of 1935. President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law in August of that year.

STUDY DESCRIPTION: The Death Master File (DMF) from the Social Security Administration (SSA) contains over 65 million records created from SSA payment records. This September 2002 release includes the following information on each decedent, if the data are available to the SSA: social security number, name, date of birth, date of death, state or country of residence (2/88 and prior), ZIP code of last residence, and ZIP code of lump sum payment. Each update of the DMF includes corrections to old data as well as additional names. The SSA does not have a death record for all persons; therefore, SSA does not guarantee the veracity of the file. Thus, the absence of a particular person is not proof this person is alive.
