When you have social anxiety disorder, you know that your anxiety or fear is out of proportion to the situation. Social anxiety can be limited to a single social situation, such as speaking in front of groups (a specific social phobia), or it can be generalized to multiple social situations or environments where individuals feel conspicuous. Common situations that can trigger anxiety include being introduced to others, being watched while doing something (like eating), meeting important people, being asked to say something in front of a group, making small talk at parties, returning items at a store or restaurant, making telephone calls to strangers or having to leave a message on a voicemail.
People with social anxiety disorder experience overwhelming anxiety and heightened self-consciousness in some or most social situations. They tend to have performance fears, exaggerating their own mistakes and believing that all eyes are on them, watching to see them sweat, blush or otherwise show fear. They are ... sensitive to criticism and rejection and believe that others are ready to pass judgment when they fail.
What is social anxiety, you ask? Well, to put it simply you fear certain social situations and will go to any lengths to avoid them. This doesn’t necessarily follow that you’ll be of a retiring nature and that you won’t like social gatherings. It only means that certain specific social situations lead you to feel anxiety and sometimes to experience panic attacks. So whereas a person with a shy disposition might shirk all social gatherings, you could be the life of the party one minute with all eyes on you and loving it and the next minute something could happen to bring about your Social Anxiety. Perhaps you find yourself in a humiliating situation or you find yourself in a position from which you can’t remove yourself and that’s when your Social Anxiety symptoms will all kick in at once drowning you in their viselike grip.
With social anxiety disorder, it is possible to progress from debilitating fear of one social situation to having anxiety about all social encounters (generalized). If this occurs, additional treatment is needed that usually includes adding medications and increasing the amount of professional counseling you receive.
Just learning about social anxiety disorder and knowing that it is highly treatable can relieve some of your pain and discomfort. There are ... a number of coping techniques that you can use to relieve anxiety when you find yourself in a social situation.
