Social Anxiety Disorder: People
built 635 days ago
Social anxiety disorder can range in its behavior. Some individuals may only suffer from a specific fear such as eating or drinking, speaking, or writing if others are around or watching. Some people have a fear or going to the bathroom in a public restroom. This can be as serious as causing physical sickness or weakness to the bladder because of the anxiety involved, while some people are fearful in all social situations and is never comfortable.
Social anxiety disorder is characterized by intense difficulty controlling anxiety in common social situations. It can be limited to one specific situation (like public speaking) or more broad situations (talking with anyone other than close friends or relatives, for example). People with social phobia generally have a significant fear of being judged or evaluated. They often realize that their fears are disproportionate or irrational, but still have difficulty. People with severe social anxiety may experience sleep problems, worry days in advance about a situation, and have difficulty fulfilling work or school obligations.

Most people who have Social Anxiety Disorder will avoid social situations in which they experience anxious feelings. Of course the outcome of this is that the more the individual tells herself that she cannot do task, or enter the social situation that she fears, the more she will convince herself that she can never do the task, and as a result, will tend to avoid the situation all together. This avoidant behaviour often leads to isolation from family, friends and society, loneliness and depression.
Because some people with Social Anxiety Disorder suffer symptoms only in certain situations, like speaking in public or making presentations or performing, some patients live a relatively symptom-free life, if they are not often placed in these difficult situations. For those with more encompassing symptoms that include any public situation – in other words, any time spent around other people where the patient is expected to socialize – symptoms may be more frequent and obvious. These symptoms include:
Social anxiety disorder involves overwhelming anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations. People with social phobia have a persistent, intense, and chronic fear of being watched and judged by others and being embarrassed or humiliated by their own actions. Their fear may be so severe that it interferes with work or school, and other ordinary activities. While many people with social phobia recognize that their fear of being around people may be excessive or unreasonable, they are unable to overcome it. They often worry for days or weeks in advance of a dreaded situation.
Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia) can be a chronic, disabling condition which causes people to suffer in silence when those around them cannot understand. You are not alone. Seek support and treatment now, explain your condition to loved ones, and you will be on your way to recovery.
