Asthmatic patients have a 3-fold increase risk for social anxiety disorder. Other medical diseases with increased risk include: heart disease, patients with diffulty seeing or hearing, and those with a painful condition.

Since individuals with social anxiety disorder are unable to function well, if at all, in groups, individual therapy is needed. Group therapy may be used for patients when they reach the point where they are able to function in a group setting.

At the ADAA meeting, Duke University researchers presented clinical study results that showed Lexapro significantly reduced anxiety symptoms in patients with generalized anxiety disorder when compared to placebo. In the double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 240 patients with GAD were randomized to two treatment arms: placebo group or a Lexapro flexible-dose group for eight weeks following a one-week, single-blind placebo lead-in period. Patients were 18 to 80 years of age.

It is important to note that a patient with an anxiety disorder will often exhibit symptoms of Clinical Depression and vice-versa. Rarely does a patient exhibit symptoms of only one or the other.

There have been suggestions that the threshold for amygdala activity is lower in individuals with anxiety disorders than in healthy individuals. However, despite its immediate plausibility, there have been relatively few tests of this hypothesis. Specifically, there have been very few explorations of the performance of patients with anxiety disorders on measures known to implicate the amygdala.
