Social Anxiety Disorder: Medications
built 621 days ago
A fairly ‘new’ anxiety, Social Anxiety disorder was overlooked for quite a long while by the medical community as it was often confused with shyness. That being said, the drug companies haven’t been backward and there are as many Social Anxiety medications on the market as there are other anxiety medications although truly most anti anxiety drugs are suitable for all types of anxiety disorders. Only a very few drugs are completely anxiety specific, so a general mild anti anxiety medication will probably work just as well as specific Social Anxiety medications.

In addition to encouraging Americans to relax and learn to manage their stress, National Stress Out Week will educate the public about the difference between anxiety and an anxiety disorder. As part of this initiative, ADAA released a portion of the results from its first-ever national web-based survey in the November issue of Self magazine. The survey results show that the majority of American adults suffer from daily stress and anxiety. In addition, over one-third of those surveyed described persistent stress or excessive anxiety in their daily lives and nearly one-third have suffered from an anxiety or panic attack. Despite this, relatively few adults have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder or have taken prescription medication to manage stress, nervousness, emotional problems, or lack of sleep.

If you are taking medications to treat social anxiety disorder, you will need regular checkups to monitor the medications (such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and their potential side effects. The medications may cause bothersome side effects that may make your anxiety worse at first. These side effects may get better over time. But if they do not, you may need to take a different medicine.

Normally social anxiety disorder help is a two-fold process involving both "talk" therapy and the use of medications. Although the prescriptions may relieve much of the psychological pain caused by the anxiety, key changes in behavior are required to actually begin to overcome the condition. For the individual with social anxiety, support in a group or one-on-one basis is extremely helpful.

There is research indicating that social anxiety disorder is often correlated with bipolar disorder [7]. Some researchers believe they share an underlying cyclothymic-anxious-sensitive disposition. [8] In addition, studies show that more socially phobic patients treated with anti-depressant medication develop hypomania than non-phobic controls[9] [10], although this can be seen as the medication creating a new problem, and ... has this adverse effect in a proportion of those without social phobia.
