built 632 days ago
People with panic disorder ... vary greatly from people with other anxiety disorders. Individuals with panic disorder want very much to be with others and participate in life. People with panic disorder are only afraid of having a panic attack in a place where they will be unable to control or handle their symptoms.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder have been found to have a hypersensitive amygdala, for example in relation to social threat cues (e.g. someone might be evaluating you negatively), angry or hostile faces, and while just waiting to give a speech.[47] Recent research has ... indicated that another area of the brain, the 'Anterior cingulate cortex', which was already known to be involved in the experience of physical pain, also appears to be involved in the experience of 'social pain', for example perceiving group exclusion.[48]
It is not unusual for people to blush, cry, sweat, shake, and have heart palpitations, nausea, or other gastric upset in the midst of a social anxiety attack. Since these symptoms tend to call attention to the individual they only make the social anxiety much worse.

Untreated anxiety disorders often can lead to substance abuse, depression, and even suicide. To help individuals learn about anxiety disorders, their symptoms, and effective treatments, mental health professionals are available for this screening as part of a free national outreach program. The program includes viewing a video, completing a screening questionnaire, meeting a doctor or mental health professional to review the questionnaire, and receiving information about various anxiety disorders and mental illnesses.
