For more than 50 years, the Department of Social Anthropology has been recognised, nationally and internationally, as one of the premier centres for research and teaching in the subject. This strength has always been based on the diversity of the specific interests of its staff and students,

The Centre for Social Anthropology and Computing was founded in 1985 by Prof. John Davis. The Centre was originally organised to focus computer-related activities within anthropology at a time when departmental organisation was more or less absent. Since that time anthropology has been organised into a formal budgetary entity, first BOSSSA, and most recently DOSSA. Initially CSAC was directly involved in teaching and training, as well as research. The teaching functions have been almost entirely incorporated into DOSSA, and instructional computing, with the exception of Lucy, the CSAC Unix server, is now funded from devolved equipment funds. The Department makes contributions to maintain Lucy, and has contributed some capitol expenditure.
The Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology is an integral part of Social Anthropology at Manchester. Staff in the Centre offer a range of courses in visual anthropology and culture at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level. The Centre contributes to the following postgraduate courses involving hands-on instruction in ethnographic film-making and/or other practical project work: MA in Visual Anthropology, MPhil in Visual Anthropology, MPhil in Ethnographic Documentary and PhD in Social Anthropology with Visual Media. The MA in Visual Anthropology is a Taught Course, the others are Research Degrees.
The Department ... houses the Centre for Social Anthropology and Computing (CSAC) under its Director, Dr. Michael Fischer. Thanks to the Centre the Department is one of the world's leading institutions in the field of the application of computing techniques to anthropology.
