Okay, so maybe that's the most simplistic, jaded (and possibly unfair) way to portray So You Think You Can Dance, Fox's American Idol for hoofers, but it's ... mostly true. This isn't to say the show's premiere episode didn't provide a moderately enjoyable summer diversion. But even putting its bloated length aside — two hours was most certainly 60 minutes too many — So You Think still pales in comparison to Idol, not to mention its other reality-competition predecessor, Dancing With the Stars, on several levels.

So You Think You Can Dance TV Show is a spin off of American Idol and has been able to gain it's own identity and success. The second season really brought the show to the top of the Summer's rating with Benji's star performances. The show follows the American Idol format and starts off with several auditions which eventually lead to 20 finalists. After a while the judges turn the voting over to America, who choose the winner by telephone and text voting.

Nigel Lythgoe serves as executive producer of So You Think You Can Dance as well as one of its choreographer/judges. One of the UK's most respected TV talents, Lythgoe began his career at the age of 10 as a dancer. Later, he switched to choreography for "The Young Generation" dance group and went on to choreograph over 500 television shows around the world, including shows for Engelbert Humperdinck, The Muppets and five Royal Variety Performances. Lythgoe became a household name as a tough judge on the UK series "Popstars," leading him to be dubbed "Nasty Nigel" by viewers. So You Think You Can Dance holds auditions across the major cities of the US, looking for the top dancers in each city. All types of dance backgrounds are encouraged to audition. Salsa, ballroom, hip hop, street dancing, contemporary, jazz, ballet and many other types of dancers can be seen auditioning for a chance to win the grand prize—which, in the past, has included a new Hybrid SUV, $100,000 in cash, and a dancing role in Celine Dion's Las Vegas show—of US$250,000 and the title of "America's favorite dancer."

Fox has rolled out its summer schedule, and the network is hoping to get off on the right foot with the fourth season of So You Think You Can Dance. The nationwide dance contest from the producers of American Idol mixes break-dancers with ballroom aficionados and everything in between in the search for the guy or gal with the grooviest moves. The show kicks off with a two-night premiere on May 22.The network ... unveiled plans for a new, unscripted role-reversal series tentatively titled When Women Rule the World.
