Snoring can ... be a symptom of sleep apnea, which can be life-threatening. While snoring is caused by narrow airways, sleep apnea is a true breathing obstruction, which requires the sleeper to awaken to begin breathing again. A person with sleep apnea wakes up many times a night to regain breathing, but usually remembers nothing at all about the awakenings. The sleep partner of a person with sleep apnea usually remembers the awakenings and is generally a good witness of the incidents.

Snoring is the noise produced during sleep by vibrations of the soft tissues at the back of your nose and throat. The noise is created by turbulent flow of air through narrowed air passages. In general and in most cases, snoring has no medical significance unless it keeps you or others from sleeping. However, a more serious problem related to snoring can occur when those same soft tissues block the air passages at the back of the throat while you are sleeping. This interferes with the ability to breathe. This condition is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and it can directly affect your health.

Snoring has its social and health impacts. Over the years, excessive snoring and sleep apnea were related with some illnesses like hypertension, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular diseases. Snoring ... creates some tension in relationships. Snoring is considered a major nuisance for so long that the first anti-snoring oral device patented dates back to the 1930’s. Snoring occurs when the muscles of the throat, tongue and soft palate relax during deep sleep. The tissue sags, narrowing the air passage and causing one to inhale more forcefully. This in turn causes the tissue at the back of the throat to vibrate. There are a number of contributing factors, including: smoking, obesity, alcohol consumption, or physical characteristics like a narrow airway or an elongated soft palate. In some cases, finding a way to quit snoring will require a specific diagnosis of the cause. However, many former snorers have found a solution to snoring problems without a medical diagnosis.

Snoring can be lessened if the snorer looses weight and/or works out regularly. Avoiding alcoholic beverages within 4 hours of retiring helps decrease snoring, as does avoiding tranquilizers, sleeping pills, and antihistamines. Sleeping on one's side ... helps decrease snoring. Keeping the neck extended and letting one's sleeping partner fall asleep first helps, too.

Sleep apnea is a condition that has been linked to numerous injuries and even death. Oxygen flow to the brain is restricted, and the patient is put at risk for potentially life-threatening health problems. Following the drop in oxygen that occurs during an apneic episode, reoxygenation releases enormous numbers of free radicals into the system. If left untreated, patients with apnea are 4 times more likely to suffer from a stroke, and 3 times more likely to contract heart disease. Sleep apnea patients run a higher risk of having hypertension, diabetes and other related conditions.
