Due to the overwhelming response of their fans in North America, the "Snakes & Arrows" tour has been Rush's highest grossing tour ever and the best attended in many years. Snakes & Arrows (Anthem/Atlantic Records) was recorded in the fall of 2006 with Grammy Award-winner Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver) with Rush co-producing. Their first album of original material in nearly five years, Snakes & Arrows debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200. In addition, the track "Malignant Narcissism" has been nominated for a Grammy Award in the category Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

Snakes have skin embedded with scales. The scales are made of keratin, the same substance fingernails are made of. Their eyes are covered by a clear scale called the brille which protects their eyes from dust, debris, and injury. The purpose scales serve is to protect the snake's skin, enable serpentile locomotion, and minimize water loss. From time to time the snakes shed the outer layer of their scales. It is a common misconsception that snakes shed their skin -- they actually only shed the outer layers of the skin -- since this part is incapable of growing.

Snakes have a +4 racial bonus on Hide, Listen, and Spot checks and a +8 racial bonus on Balance and Climb checks. A snake can always choose to take 10 on a Climb check, even if rushed or threatened. Snakes use either their Strength modifier or Dexterity modifier for Climb checks, whichever is higher. A snake has a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. It can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. It can use the run action while swimming, provided it swims in a straight line.

Snakes regularly shed the outer layer of their skin as they grow. Even in snakes that are not growing, the scales become drab and worn over time, and must be periodically replaced by a new, healthy layer. Some species of snakes shed their skin about every 20 days, but other species shed it only once a year. In the shedding process, a new layer develops below the surface of the old one, which gradually separates in preparation for being shed, or sloughed. The snake begins the shedding process by rubbing its nose against rocks or other hard objects to separate the old layer from its lips. After the old layer is loosened, the snake crawls out of its old skin, typically shedding it in a single piece.

Snakes play an invaluable role in controlling many pests. Mice and rats destroy millions of dollars in wheat, corn, and other crops every year. Without predators like snakes, mice that can produce 50 offspring a year per female would soon become a serious problem. Many farmers know that the best way to control mice is to keep a ratsnake in the barn. Snakes in the garden are helpful in controlling common pests such as harmful insects, slugs, and snails. Snake venom is being researched as a treatment for cancer, epilepsy, arthritis, and other human diseases.
