Snakes: People
built 201 days ago
Snakes are an integral part of the food chain. They are small, shy animals that are frightened by people. Understanding their role in nature and their unassuming presence are vital to dispel the myths and fears people have of snakes.

Snakes need cool, damp shelters and may take residence under and possibly inside buildings. This behavior may become more noticeable in the fall, when snakes seek areas to hibernate for the winter. Nonvenomous snakes do not pose any major problems except for possibly frightening people and being a nuisance. Venomous snakes... may cause a health hazard by biting people, pets, and livestock, so steps should be taken to exclude, and if necessary, remove them.

[S]nakes are deaf, so they cannot hear the music of the charmer's instrument. Researchers have pointed out that many of these snake charmers are good sleight-of-hand artists. The snake moves corresponding to the flute movement and the vibrations from the tapping of the charmer's foot which is not noticed by the public. They rarely catch their snakes and the snakes are either nonvenomous or defanged cobras. Sometimes these people exploit the fear of snakes by releasing snakes into the neigbourhood and then offering to rid the residence of snakes. Other snake charmers ... have a snake and mongoose show, where both the animals have a mock fight; however, this is not very common, as the snakes may be seriously injured or killed.

It is unfair to say that snakes are dumb (though they ain't exactly Edison, they ain't exactly Dan Quayle, either). Although it is true to say that snakes act mainly through "instinct", snakes are very perceptive of their enviroment. For instance, a lot of snakekeepers say when they go to their rattlesnakes, the snakes act calm and normal. But when other people try to approach them, they rattle vigoriously and take defensive poses. Although it's nice to think that snakes have emotions (like joy, anger, and affection), scientific studies show that snakes just don't have the cerebral capacity for them. However, snakes do have "primitive" feelings like aggression, fear, and pleasure.

What do snakes eat? All snakes are carnivores (car-ni-vorz) or meat-eaters. There are no snakes that can eat people in Florida. Small snakes eat bugs and frogs. Larger ones eat fish, birds, mice, and rabbits. They use sharp teeth and strong muscles to catch the prey.

It is an unfortunate fact of modern life that snakes are not as abundant as they once were. Destruction of habitat due to urban sprawl, pollution, and deforestation have caused many species to decline or even disappear from many parts of the Commonwealth. Needless persecution by people who run them over in cars or kill them on sight contributes to this problem.
