Smiley is the first African American to host his own signature talk show on NPR. Newsweek profiled him as one of the "20 people changing how Americans get their news." The Philadelphia Inquirer sees him as "one of the most important political voices of his generation."

Smiley, who conceived of the forums, said they are an outgrowth of last year's New York Times best-seller, the Covenant with Black America. When the book was released in 2006, both the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee pledged that their respective presidential candidates would address the issues outlined in the book. Edited by Smiley, the book outlines 10 of the most pressing issues facing African Americans.

A shade under a decade later, Smiley triumphantly returned when he hooked back up with his Gang Starr affiliates, by appearing on (Werdz From The Ghetto Child?) Gang Starrs 2003 opus The Ownerz. Re-embraced by his Gang Starr cohorts and the public, in 2005 Smiley released his DJ Premier produced single The Wake Up Call,? which ... featured production from Showbiz and Sebb (G-Unit & Infamous Mobb). The vinyl only single went on to become Fat Beats best seller in 2005. Later that year Smiley hit the road for two major tours; including the first 60 Dates on the "Weapons of MIC Destruction Tour" with Ghostface, Pharoahe Monch, M.O.P. and Cormega.
