built 193 days ago
Smashing Pumpkins are an influential American alternative rock band, formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1988. Billy Corgan and James Iha met in a record store, and began performing in local nightclubs with their bassist, D'Arcy, before they had a drummer. Jimmy Chamberlin was hired shortly after to drum on the album [album]Gish[/album], and ended up staying due to his fitting drumming style.

The Smashing Pumpkins are back! Well, mostly. As long time Pumpkins fans will know, the band officially broke up in late 2000. Billy Corgan, lead vocalist and band front man, has spent the last seven years working briefly with his band Zwan, contributing musically to other artists, creating a solo album and even writing a book of poetry. But now Corgan has joined with original Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, along with newcomers Jeff Schroeder, Ginger Reyes, and Lisa Harriton to create a new incarnation of The Smashing Pumpkins.

Of the original Smashing Pumpkins, only drummer Jimmy Chamberlin heeded Corgan's call. But the Pumpkins were always mostly about Corgan, who not only fronted the band but was ... its main songwriter and guitarist. His nasal, keening voice and the clouds of overdubbed guitars are what most identify the band's sound. On the new record, Zeitgeist, those elements are back in spades.

The smashing Pumpkins started when Billy Corgan met James Iha in a record store. With James on guitar, Billy on Bass and a drum machine, the group started playing clubs. One noght Billy met D'Arcy Wretzky outside a club. The two became fast friends, and D'Arcy took over Bass alowing Billy to play lead guitar. They picked up Jimmy Chamberlin on drums, and were ready to play.

Last night, the Smashing Pumpkins made its first live appearance in seven years, playing a 29-song set at Paris' Grand Rex. We didn't go, but here's our best guess as to what happened: Billy Corgan repeatedly made his half-smile/half-snarl face; the three new members (Jeff Schroeder, Ginger Reyes and Lisa Harriton) looked slightly terrified; and people got very excited when the band played the first few notes of "Today." Also, it was 19 hours long, and included such new songs as the acoustic ballad "For God and Country," which was captured in all of its mid-fi camera-phone glory: more

As previously reported, frontman Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin of Smashing Pumpkins gave fans the opportunity to send in video recorded questions via Youtube which in turn would be answered in like fashion. The arrangement is called 'Ask A Pumpkin' and tackled the tough questions, for instance, why Paris Hilton? The band sifted through over a hundred questions and responded to a few of their favorites. Watch the 13-minute clip below. MORE
