The Smashing Pumpkins released their final album, Machina II: The Friends and Enemies of Modern Music, in MP3 form and on 25 vinyl records, completely bypassing Virgin Records, the band's record company. Angry that Virgin didn't want to produce a follow-up to their earlier Machina release, the band cut the 25 albums and distributed them to friends, asking them to get the songs copied and distributed in any way they could, including MP3 file swapping via Napster, Gnutella, AIMster, etc. 23 of the 25 tracks on Machina II are new and unheard.

For their first album of new material since 2000, the Smashing Pumpkins produce a meaty slab of bombast-saturated alt-rock -- Zeitgeist is many things, but subtle isn't one of them. Single "Tarantula" sets the harried pace, and there's plenty to bang your head to here, but the grace and variety the band made its name with is missing: Gone are the heart-wrenching ballads and aching melodies, replaced by aggressive songs that bear more resemblance to Velvet Revolver than the Pumpkins of yore. Makes you wonder whether the missing D'Arcy and James Iha were the heart of this band all along.
