Slovenia joined the United Nations on 22 May 1992, as the 176th Member State. Upon its admittance, the President of Slovenia, H.E. Mr. Milan Kučan, delivered an acceptance speech in the General Assembly and presented the United Nations with a gift on behalf of the people of Slovenia. The gift is a replica of a bronze pail from the 6th century BC, called a situla, with hammered reliefs depicting cult feasts, animals and competitions. Since 1992, the United States and the Republic of Slovenia have developed an impressive track record of cooperation on bilateral, regional, and global issues. The United States has worked closely with the Slovenes to resolve succession issues stemming from the breakup of Yugoslavia. Slovenia provided invaluable assistance to the United States and NATO by facilitating the deployment of the Implementation Force (IFOR)--and subsequently SFOR--to Bosnia after the conclusion of the Dayton accords. With strong U.S. support, Slovenia has developed the International Trust Fund as the demining instrument of choice in the Balkans and is expanding operations to include the Caucasus.

Slovenia is governed under the constitution of 1991. The president, who is the head of state, is elected by popular vote for a five-year term and is eligible for a second term. The government is headed by the prime minister, who is nominated by the president and elected by the National Assembly. There is a bicameral Parliament. Of the 90 members of the National Assembly, 40 are directly elected and 50 are elected on a proportional basis, all for four-year terms. Members of the 40-seat, advisory National Council are indirectly elected for five-year terms.

Slovenia's privatisation programme was slow to start because of the Yugoslav system of 'social ownership'. Some 50% of the economy remains in state ownership, including in the banking, public utilities and telecommunications sectors.
