{$Slipknot} set out to construct the ultimate {\metal} music flamethrower, ever since their genesis in a Des Moines, IA, basement. But they ... deployed an agitprop campaign of masks, smocks, and bar codes that helped scare parents (like good {\metal} should) and transform {$Slipknot} fans into faithful "maggots." The Midwestern origin of all this craziness is genius, as the band's marrow-draining {\metal} and twisted, fibrous mythology is antithetical to the region's milquetoast rep. Still, after the gothic nausea of 2001's {^Iowa}, {$Slipknot}'s vitality dissipated in clouds of gaseous hype and individual indulgence. Had they grown fat on their thrones? Probably. Slipknot's mix of grinding, post-Korn alternative metal, Marilyn Manson-esque neo-shock rock, and rap-metal helped make them one of the most popular bands in the so-called nu-metal explosion of the late '90s. But even more helpful was their theatrical, attention-grabbing image: the band always performed in identical industrial jump suits and homemade Halloween masks, and added to its mysterious anonymity by adopting the numbers zero through eight as stage aliases. Add to that a lyrical preoccupation with darkness and nihilism, and an affectionately insulting name for their fans ("Maggots"), and Slipknot's blueprint for nu-metal success was set.

Though Slipknot's roots lie back as far as 1992, the band formed in November 1995. The band underwent many line-up changes before releasing their highly successful debut album Slipknot in 1999. Their popularity rose quickly with this release, and since then they have released two other albums, Iowa and Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses). Slipknot are expected to release a fourth album in 2008.

Performing as part of the gargantuan festival, Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison accompanied Korn on drums. This record-breaking performance was Jordison's fifth Download appearance since its inception in 2002, and marks him as the only artist to play the festival multiple times in 4 different high-profile bands. Past Download performances include: Murderdolls (main stage 2002), Slipknot (main stage 2004 & 2005), and a guest appearance with Metallica (main stage 2004). Jordison has been performing with Korn since the departure of drummer David Silveria and states, "when I first heard Korn they blew me away and I have been a fan ever since...I'm looking forward to playing drums with these guys for the next five months!"

Springing forth from the cornfields of Iowa (like some sort of reverse pet semetary) Slipknot has managed to channel their violence and speed-metal-thrash into a much needed foray into masochism for their special fans known as "maggots." All nine members look like they stepped out of a sickly twisted carnival that mass murderer John Wayne Gacy would find offensive. From the three-pronged percussion sonic assault, the twisted guitar interplay and the odd samplings from the turntable - Slipknot has laid their claim as one of the most brutal and hypnotic bands to see live. Their masks hide their true identities or are these bizarre manifestations really who and what they are?

Slipknot's percussionist M. Shawn Crahan (AKA Clown) recently stated that he doesn't expect the band to return to the recording studio until summer/autumn 2007. This would mean that a new album would likely be released in spring/summer 2008.
