The guitar Slim bought from a Nulla Nulla farmer cost him 30 shillings. Lessons came free. He practised the clear chords played on live radio shows by his favourite singing cowboy, Buddy Williams.

Anyway someone must have tipped off all these freak fans of Slim that he was staying here. Next thing we have people coming into reception asking (demanding) where he is, what room he is in - One total freak aged in her late 50's and obviously a total hill billy with something missing said she knew Slim and his wife and asked to speak to her. I was in the office laughing at her (she had her back to me) at the time - she was asking questions like, "What are you doing for dinner...", "My husband is a man on the land and has horses, I would like to take you out to show you" and so on.

The tone of celebration is set from the start with Slim’s How Good It Is - another of the fine collaborations between Slim and Cold Chisel writer Don Walker (previous collaborations incl. Looking Forward , Looking Back , Charleville)…

The University made special arrangements to allow Slim to wear his bush hat throughout the graduation ceremony and to swap if for a mortarboard when he was presented with the award. The 350 faculty of business and public management graduates and guests were given a rare glimpse of Slim without his bush hat and a performance of When the Rain Tumbles Down in July."

"I am so proud," Dusty's widow Joy McKean said. "Slim is still there, in amongst his friends and colleagues." The 33rd annual Toyota Golden Guitar Awards will be held on January 15 - the opening weekend of the Tamworth festival.
