Slim Dusty is the most prolific and biggest selling recording artist in Australia, with more than 5 million of his recordings sold on the domestic market. In 2000 the 73-year-old Australian country music legend released his 100th album.
Slim Dusty played an active role in the Australian country music industry. In 1992 he was one of a small group who formed the Country Music Association of Australia becoming its founding President, serving in that position until his retirement in 2001.
Dusty's appearances outside of his native Australia were very limited. He visited the UK during a world trip in 1990 that ... saw him visit the USA. In Nashville, he professed interest in the Ryman Auditorium and the Country Music Hall Of Fame but was highly critical of some other places. He is reported to have said of Twitty City, "If you put that up in Australia, they'd throw bricks through the window". Unlike many country singers, he had no desire to perform in Nashville, not even on the Grand Ole Opry, which seemingly failed to impress him. It has been stated that when he arrived back on Australian soil, he knelt down to kiss the tarmac. He accepted the brilliance of the American musicians but the Nashville sound was far removed from his bush ballads and consequently held little interest for him.

When he died, Slim had been working on his 106th album, for EMI Records. On 8 March 2004 the album Columbia Lane - the Last Sessions debuted at number one on the country charts and number five in the Australian album charts. Less than two weeks later it went gold. The first single Answer to Billy received more airplay than any other country song in the same period.
