Over the years Slim Dusty won every accolade possible, from Tamworth Music Awards Golden Guitars to his MBE. In September 2000, he was one of the Australian performers featured in the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games. Slim was given the job of singing Australia's unofficial national anthem, 'Waltzin' Matilda'. No-one else would have been as appropriate. He died on September 19, 2003 after a long and private battle with cancer and was awarded a state funeral.
Mr Carr said that EMI Australia, which had a long history with Slim Dusty, would ... provide sponsorship for the project. "This is a fitting tribute for Kempsey's hometown hero," he said. "The Centre will not only honour and pay tribute to Slim and his achievements, it will inject millions of tourist dollars to the Mid North Coast region."
Amos, hailing from Slim Dusty's own hometown of Kempsey on the mid north coast of NSW, is the Nulla label's latest signing. Over the last few years, he has been steadily building a devoted following both in Australia and New Zealand with his strong live performances combined with his totally fresh approach to the traditional Australian bush ballad style of music. Amos was discovered by Joy McKean back in 2003 at a Slim Dusty tribute night in Kempsey and after several years of mentoring, Joy signed Amos to her Nulla recording label.
