Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: Great Lakes
built 217 days ago
The Native Americans who paddled and camped along Sleeping Bear Bay feasted on wild rice that they harvested by canoe from the Upper Great Lakes region. This tasty, natural food source helped them on their travels and through the long Northern winters. Today, anytime is a good time for wild rice. Enjoy this Great Lakes tradition as a side dish, in salads, soups and stews.

The Dunes Trail at Sleeping Bear Point leads past the Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station, one of some 60 life-saving stations that once served Great Lakes mariners. Shipwrecks in the United States were once considered a concern mostly for Atlantic sea captains but after 214 people perished in shipwrecks on the Great Lakes in 1870-1871, Congress authorized money to train professional life-saving crews. Now restored to its early 1900s appearance, the life-saving station now operates a museum.

The best beaches of the Great Lakes are here at Sleeping Bear. This is absolutely by favorite place to come relax and spend the lazy days of summer. Great small towns are nearby with great restaurants, especially Art's Tavern in Glen Arbor. There are lots of little shops and art galleries to stroll through all over the Leelanau area.
