One of the most notable bands to emerge out of the New York City ska revival scene of the 1990s, the Slackers is comprised of vocalist Marq Lyn, vocalist/keyboardist Vic Ruggerio, guitarist T.J. Scanlon, bassist Marcus Geard, saxophonist David Hillyard, trumpeter Jeremy Mushlin, trombonist Glen Pine, and drummer Luis Zuluaga. After beginning their career in 1991 playing rocksteady and ska in the 2-Tone vein, the Slackers moved toward a more traditional style, even adding a horn section in 1994. They issued their debut LP, Better Late Than Never, in 1996, followed a year later by Redlight. The group resurfaced in 1998 with The Question; Live at Ernesto's appeared two years later; Wasted Days, which featured a cover of Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive," surfaced in early 2001.

The chaps at Ars Technica are reporting that Slackers stores, of Illinois and Missouri, are retailing their entire Wii stock on eBay, making a tidy $150 profit over the MSRP. According to an unnamed employee at Slackers, the stores are receiving a regular shipment of Wii consoles. Unfortunately, none of those are making it to the shop floor. Instead, to increase their profit margins, they are selling their entire stock via eBay, with a "Buy it Now" price of $399.99. The price was lowered from a previous $499.99, as the products were not exactly flying off the cyber shelves. Ars Technica tried contacting the management, but failed to receive a response.

"Slackers" starts with Sawa as Dave narrating a sequence that shows how he and his roommates go to great lengths to steal test booklets, sit in on tests to copy down the questions for use later and other cheating scams. In one such incident, Dave sits next to Angela (King) and draws the attention of jealous freak Ethan (Schwartzman). In swift order, Ethan finds out the secret of Dave and his two roomies, Jeff (Michael C. Maronna) and Sam (Jason Segel), and threatens to expose them unless they help him get a date with Angela. Predictably, in study groups and other moments alone, Dave falls for Angela, while she has not the slightest interest in Ethan.

The Slackers sprung up around 1990 with a 2-Tone sound that could be still be heard six years later when they finally got around to recording their aptly-titled Moon Records debut, Better Late Than Never. By the release of their astounding 1997 album Red Light, though, much about the band had changed. Now recording for Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong's Hellcat label, the Slackers added a horn section that helps point their sound back toward its Jamaican roots.

Set at a small college, "Slackers" is yet another movie about the love and humiliation rites of young male bozos competing for the sweetest, super-pretty girl. The feature debut of director Dewey Nicks, starring Devon Sawa, Jason Schwartzman and James King, the Screen Gems presentation barely distinguishes itself with luridly graphic sex jokes, but such generic excesses continue to be enough to draw big opening weekend crowds.
