Sissy Spacek

Strawberry blonde, freckle-faced, and willowy, Sissy Spacek was among the most popular female stars of the late '70s and '80s. The Texas born and bred actress originally aspired to become a singer, and, after heading east to New York, got her start singing at coffee houses in Greenwich Village. Billing herself as "Rainbo," Spacek ... cut a single, "Johnny, You Went Too Far This Time." On the side, she earned money by recording backup vocals on television commercials. When the acting bug bit, Spacek enrolled at the Lee Strasberg Theatrical Institute. While she technically made her film debut as an extra in Andy Warhol's Trash (1971), her official debut is listed as Michael Ritchie's Prime Cut (1972).

One other note on Sissy Spacek: There was a write up in the Dallas Morning News one time telling the story about the closest movie theater to see her movies was the Select Theater in Mineola. The funny thing was that the Select Theater didn't have enough Ss to spell her name on the Marque out front. So, her name never was spelled right. - James C. Neal, Mineola, Texas, August 13, 2005

Mary Elizabeth “Sissy” Spacek was born in Tyler, Texas, in 1949. Upon coming-of-age she briefly relocated to New York, where for eight months she studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. She tried modeling and singing, and she appeared in West Village showcases (such as The Bitter End) for ten dollars a night. After moving to Hollywood to visit her actor cousin, Rip Torn, Spacek’s acting career suddenly took off. After her portrayal of a white slave in the “blood and gore” film Prime Cut (1972; a forgettable production in which her appearance was favorably noted by certain critics), she convincingly portrayed a disturbed teenager in Badlands (1973). In Brian de Palma’s Carrie (1976; based on Stephen King’s first novel), her strong performance as a tormented teenager who possessed murderous telekinetic powers resulted in her first nomination for an Oscar.

Hope that no country music listener has been harmed by the harsh noise project Sissy Spacek. The outfit quickly became John Wiese's preferred channel to release his most extreme music. The self-titled album consists of 79 tracks totalling only 23 minutes of music. Only? Nah, it's enough -- and not because of the harshness but of the light-speed cut-and-paste that quickly becomes dizzying. The closest comparison would be John Oswald's Plexure (from his plunderphonics series), although one is ... reminded of the way Fantômas piece together tunes from the tiniest riffs.
