Sinusitis is usually a very easily treated disease if treatment is sought in a timely manner and the proper treatment is provided. If the conditions returns often it is advised that the patient attempt to determine if an allergy is the cause.

[One] distinctive feature of CF related sinusitis is how the sinuses look on imaging studies. Plain radiographs, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are all appropriate tools to evaluate patients with sinus symptoms. Agenesis, or lack of proper formation, of the frontal sinuses is common in CF and can be seen on plain radiographs. This finding is thought to be due to obstruction of the sinuses that occurs early in life.7 In CT and MRI scans, more than 75% opacification of the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses is considered a hallmark of CF. Finally, abnormal paranasal sinuses, defined as bulging of the lateral nasal wall near the middle meatus and resorption of the uncinate process (bony structures found in the nose) is considered a finding distinctive for CF sinusitis.8

If your doctor suspects that your sinusitis is caused by a fungus, surgery may be necessary for diagnosis and treatment. Most forms of fungal sinusitis are normally only seen in patients who have weakened immune systems, and some forms are very serious infections. Confirming the presence of fungus is important because fungal sinusitis needs to be treated with antifungal agents, rather than antibiotics. For instance, with maxillary sinusitis there might be swelling and tenderness in the area below the side of the nose underneath the eye socket. At the same time there might be a tooth ache in the upper teeth as the nerve roots can be directly irritated from inflammation in the bottom part of the sinus cavity where the nerves run by. With a frontal sinusitis there is often a frontal headache. With ethmoid sinusitis there is a splitting headache in he front and pain between and behind the eyes. A sphenoid sinusitis gives the patient a more dull headache either in the back or in the front.

Acute sinusitis usually follows some type of upper respiratory tract infection or cold. Instead of ending, the cold seems to linger on, with constant or even worsening congestion. Drainage from the nose often changes from a clear color to a thicker, yellowish-green. The individual may develop a fever. Headache and pain over the affected sinuses may occur, as well as a feeling of pressure that may worsen when the patient bends over. There may be pain in the jaw or teeth.
