Maxillary sinusitis causes pain around the cheek and upper teeth and an infected ethmoid sinus produces pain over the nose or behind the eyes. Pain is caused by pressure in the sinus. A blocked ostium causes oxygen in the sinus to be absorbed into the blood vessels of the mucous membrane, causing negative pressure (vacuum sinusitis). The vacuum then draws more mucus out of the membrane, resulting in positive pressure and pain.

A warm salt-water solution poured through the nose may offer some relief from both allergic and infectious sinusitis. A ceramic pot, known as a “neti lota” pot, makes this procedure easy. Alternatively, a small watering pot with a tapered spout may be used. Fill the pot with warm water and add enough salt so the solution tastes like tears. Stand over a sink, tilt your head far to one side so your ear is parallel to the floor, and pour the solution into the upper nostril, allowing it to drain through the lower nostril. Repeat on the other side.

Chronic sinusitis occurs when the problem has existed for at least three months. There is rarely a fever with chronic sinusitis. Sinus pain and pressure are frequent, as is nasal congestion. Because of the swelling in the sinuses, they may not be able to drain out the nose. Drainage, therefore, drips constantly down the back of the throat, resulting in a continuously sore throat and bad breath.

The common cold (viral respiratory illnesses), allergies and factors in the environment are the most common triggers for the development of sinusitis. Other important factors may include tobacco exposure, nasal septal deviation, nasal polyps, dryness and mold sensitivity. Diseases such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, immune deficiencies and immotile cilia syndrome are often associated with sinusitis. In many people with sinus problems, the lining of the nose and sinuses is overly sensitive to a variety of factors. Thus there are multiple possible triggers for the development of sinusitis.

Maxillary sinusitis (the most common type) manifests as cheek or dental pain. Forehead pain indicates frontal sinusitis. Pain at the bridge of the nose or behind the eye suggests ethmoid sinusitis. Pain is often referred to the top of the head with sphenoidal involvement.

Pain and pressure in the face along with a stuffy or runny nose are the main symptoms of sinusitis. You ... may have a yellow or greenish discharge from your nose. Leaning forward or moving your head often increases facial pain and pressure. The location of pain and tenderness may depend on which sinus is affected.
