Sinusitis: Allergies
built 646 days ago
With fungal sinusitis, the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses are most commonly involved. Allergic fungal sinusitis can involve complete opacification of multiple paranasal sinuses, unilateral or bilateral; sinus expansion and erosion of a wall of the involved sinus; or high-attenuating areas scattered amid mucosal thickening on nonenhanced scans. These areas are due to inspissated secretions or heavy metals such as iron, manganese, and calcium.

Allergic fungal sinusitis should be considered a distinct form of chronic sinusitis, according to research presented at the 2007 annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunolology. Researchers found that patients with allergic fungal sinusitis have an increased allergic and inflammatory response to fungi compared to patients with other types of chronic sinusitis.

There are several causes of rhinitis/sinusitis, most commonly allergy and infection. Many medications are available to treat these conditions, by both prescription and over the counter. Sometimes patients with chronic sinusitis don't improve with medication, and sinus surgery may be needed.
Chronic sinusitis can have many causes, such as respiratory infections, allergies and anatomical problems. Symptoms are similar to acute sinusitis, but they last longer. If left untreated, chronic sinusitis can be a miserable condition.
Acute sinusitis usually occurs following a viral URI and may ... occur with allergies and fungal infection that causes inflammation of the mucous membranes. Swollen mucous membranes trap and promote the growth of bacteria that cause infection, such as Haemophilus influenzae, streptococci, pneumococci, and staphylococci, because swelling prevents normal drainage from the sinus opening (ostium). Maxillary sinusitis is also associated with chronic dental infection.
Chronic sinusitis is often associated with food allergies, so identifying andeliminating the offending food can help. Irrigating the sinuses with a saltwater solution or powdered goldenseal is often recommended for sinusitis andallergies in order to clear the nasal passages of mucus.
