Singer Sewing and Vacuum Center has been locally owned and operated by Jim Tomlinson and his wife, Janice, for over 25 years. The service center has over 50 years of experience, and repairs all makes of sewing machines and vacuum cleaners. Their store is the warranty center for Singer, Royal, Riccar, Dirt Devil and Oreck.

Members of the local chapter National Education Association union, despite supporting Sandlin's candidacy, expressed support for Singer, too, after it was determined he was the choice. Although union members endorsed Sandlin for the job, NEA-Topeka president Chris Huntsman said she was "really positive and upbeat" about Singer.

Goulet, who had recently been diagnosed with interstitial pulmonary fibrosis, was awaiting a lung transplant when he died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said Norm Johnson, a spokesman for the singer. Goulet's wife of 25 years, Vera, and his sons Christopher and Michael were with him at the time of his death.

Mahogany Lounge, located inside the downtown Midland Hilton, hosts Singer/Songwriter Showcase every Tuesday starting at 7 PM. The Showcase is hosted open-mic style by Promising Productions. It is a place for musician's to colloborate, roll-out new songs or "step out of the shower" and perform for the first time.

The singer, who had fallen ill while flying home to Las Vegas after performing at a Sept. 20 concert in Syracuse, N.Y., was admitted to a Las Vegas hospital on Sept. 30. He was transferred to Cedars-Sinai as a transplant patient Oct. 14.
