Singapore Airlines: Carriers

Singapore Airlines, one of the UK's most popular carriers, announced Saturday that it plans to offer routes from London Heathrow to the US in the near future. The new route will make Singapore the first non-EU or US carrier to serve the newly open skies. The announcement comes without an official launch date because, according to Singapore Airlines, a shortage of take-off spots in Heathrow has created difficulty in scheduling.

Continually upgrading to newer planes helps keep maintenance and fuel costs down, a formula that has enabled Singapore Airlines to remain the region's most profitable carrier in absolute terms. For the fiscal year ended March, 2007, it earned $1.4 billion on sales of $9.55 billion. That's a 71% jump in earnings over the previous year. The stock price has risen 50% in the past 12 months, outperforming the 40% increase for regional rival Cathay Pacific Airways.

Star Alliance is offering Frequent Flyer Programme (FFP) upgrade redemption option across the alliance, rather than on an individual carrier basis, now available to the FFP members of ANA (ANA Mileage Club), Lufthansa (Miles & More) and Singapore Airlines (KrisFlyer). Other Star Alliance member carriers will begin to offer this product during 2006. Star Alliance Upgrade Awards allows customers to redeem miles or points from their FFP account to upgrade by one class, either from Economy Class to Business Class or from Business Class to First Class, on scheduled flights operated by participating member carriers.
