Obverse of 1969 Singapore Gold $150 Singapore was an important shipping centre in the 14th century. In 1819 the city of Singapore was founded by Sir Stamford Raffles. In 1826 it formed part of the Straits Settlements which became a Crown Colony in 1867, becoming separate in 1946. It joined Malaysia in 1963, but broke away in 1965 to become an independent republic. The $100 photographed celebrates the 150th anniversary of its founding.
Driving into Singapore with a foreign-registered car is rather complicated and expensive; see the Land Transport Authority's Driving Into & Out of Singapore guide for the administrative details. Peninsular Malaysia-registered cars need to show that they have valid road tax and Malaysian insurance coverage. Other foreign cars need a Vehicle Registration Certificate, Customs Document (Carnet), Vehicle Insurance purchased from a Singapore-based insurance company and an International Circulation Permit. All foreign registered cars and motorcycles can be driven in Singapore for a maximum of 10 days in each calendar year without paying Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) fees, but after the 10 free days have been utilised, you will need to pay a VEP fee of up to $20/day.

A "hip" ad encouraging the young people of Singapore to "get jiggy" with NEWater. There are unfounded rumours that when all the land reclamation taking place around the Singapore coast line is complete, Singapore's geographical profile will have morphed from that of a red dot to the noble figure of a Merlion. It is believed that when the reclamation is finally completed, each of the Merlion's tail flukes will be shaped as to produce a sheltered lagoon. This lagoon will be converted into an "integrated resort"; ... exactly what this resort is integrated with, no one is sure. All the same, decided to stop supplying Singapore with water from 2020 onwards, and has also threatened to cut off water supplies intermittently based on a rigorous schedule of "whenever they feel like it" and "just because they can", this threat is actually based on the extremely cheap (by current water value) raw water price agreement signed by both side decades ago, with Lee Kuan Yew stubbornly sticking with the old price. Ex-Prime minister of Malaysia, Dr. Mahathir, has said this in response: "They act like a child being bullied by it's big brother, but in reality, it's the opposite way".
On 18 December 2002, Singapore faced arch-rivals Malaysia in their first game of the Tiger Cup. 40,000 home supporters watched in horror as Singapore crashed 4-0 to their northern neighbours. To this day, the loss remains a major stain on Singapore's international results. Singapore went on to win 2-1 over Laos, but a 1-1 draw in the final group game against Thailand wasn't enough to book a place in the knock-out stages.
In 1946, the Straits Settlements was dissolved; Penang and Malacca became part of the Malayan Union, and Singapore became a separate British Crown Colony. In 1959, Singapore became self-governing, and, in 1963, it joined the newly independent Federation of Malaya, Sabah, and Sarawak--the latter two former British Borneo territories--to form Malaysia.

Note that KTMB tickets in Singapore will be charged in dollars, while those bought in Malaysia will be charged in ringgit at the same rate. A ticket which costs RM10 in Malaysia will ... cost $10 if bought in Singapore! There are three ways to avoid paying double:
