In the $50 SimCopter, Maxis built in the capacity to destroy as well as create. You start with only a water bucket for extinguishing fires, but it can cause a mess of traffic jams if the pilot has maligned intentions. Tear gas rockets and a water cannon for use in riot control can make a megalomaniac enjoy flying the unfriendly skies. And for the ultimate in decimation, you can land at a military base and pick up an AH-64 Apache armed to the gills, letting you devastate a metropolis faster than you can say, "Godzilla!"

SimCopter's team earned a Nobel prize for their efforts in graphical morphing. They made the discovery that typing in a few words, pressing Enter, and holding down Shift, could make a random helicopter pilot change into a dog in a matter of seconds! Who could have thought it?

"After SimCopter, I think everyone thought SimCity 3000 would be in 3D," explains Wright. The problem was that the existing 3D technology simply wasn't capable of handling SimCity's microscopic level of detail.
