Silverchair followed up the blackness of Neon Ballroom with the brighter Diorama. Silverchair have matured as musicians and fully realised their potential in making Diorama. Johns uses a wide range of instruments as a colourful musical palette. The band's sound is augmented by orchestral backing on many tracks. There are ... guest musicians, such as Jim Moginie from Midnight Oil, and Paul Mac who later collaborated with Johns as The Dissociatives.

Silverchair fans got their first taste of Diorama when the first single "The Greatest View" was released to radio networks in Australia in early December 2001. The single was then released January 28, 2002, to coincide with the band’s appearance on the Big Day Out tour. Silverchair is celebrating the release of "Young Modern" with an extensive tour of the United States. However, four July shows were postponed until November because Johns suffered a throat infection. [See the itinerary below for details.] Johns' illnesses, namely reactive arthritis and anorexia, have plagued the band during the last couple years, keeping the band from recording and touring. Aside from the throat infection, Gillies said Johns, who's married to soap opera star turned pop singer Natalie Imbruglia, is doing fine.

Silverchair toured extensively in support of the album propelling it to stronger worldwide sales than they had achieved with Freak Show. In Europe and South America it became the group’s most successful album to date, touring live and including appearances at festivals such as Reading and Edgefest and tours with bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers and blink-182. After all this touring the band announced that they would be taking a 12 month break.
