Although extensive literature on Sikhs and Sikhism is available, only two book-length bibliographies, neither of which is annotated, have been published on the subject. Recent events in Punjab and growing Sikh migration have increased interest in Sikh studies, necessitating a bibliography that would capture the burgeoning literature of the past few years. The present work, Sikhism and the Sikhs: An Annotated Bibliography, includes books and journal articles published in English since 1965 that are either devoted exclusively to or have an emphasis on Sikhism and the Sikhs. Each entry is annotated.

There are no denominations in Sikhism, but in the United States, in particular, there is grouping along language and cultural lines. The majority of Sikhs in the U.S. are immigrants of Indian origin, speak Punjabi, and have distinct customs and dress that originate in Punjab, India. Since the 1960s... there has existed a group, generally called American Sikhs, whose leader is Yogi Harbhajan Singh. American Sikhs are easily distinguished from others by their all white attire and by the fact that turbans are worn by both men and women. This group now numbers about 5,000. The majority of American Sikhs, who refer to their group as 3HO (Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization), know only limited Punjabi.

The Chola reverently called the Chola Sahib by the Sikhs is kept at Dera Nanak in the Punjab in a sacred building specially built for the sacred relic left by the founder of Sikhism. It is a long cloak with short sleeves and is made of brown cotton cloth.

Sikhism as a faith has never actively sought converts... the Sikhs have remained a relatively homogeneous racial group. However, mainly due to the activities of Harbhajan Singh Yogi via his Kundalini Yoga focused 3HO (Happy, Healthy, Holy) Organization, Sikhism has witnessed a moderate growth in non-Indian adherents.[76] In 1998 it was estimated that these 3HO Sikhs, known colloquially as ‘gora’ (ਗੋਰਾ) or ‘white’ Sikhs, totaled 7,800[77] and were mainly centered around Española, New Mexico, and Los Angeles, California.
