Sidney Blackmer, an important newspaperman, is crusading against the attorney general of the state who is sending prisoners to the electric chair by the dozen. Blackmer wants to prove that an innocent man can be wongly executed if condemned on a circumstancial evidence basis. He convinces his daughter's boy-friend, Dana Andrews, to appear as the ideal suspect of a crime which has just happened in the city. Together, they leave some clues implicating Andrews near the crime scene. Andrews is soon arrested. Unfortunately, Blackmer, the only one who can prove his innocence, dies in a car accident during the trial.

Crusading publisher Austin Spenser (Sidney Blackmer) wants to prove a point about the insufficiency of circumstantial evidence. Spencer talks his prospective son-in-law Tom Garrett (Dana Andrews) into participating in a hoax, the better to expose the alleged ineptitude of conviction-happy DA (Philip Bourneuf). Tom will plant clues indicating that he is the murderer of a nightclub dancer, then stand trial for murder; just as the jury reaches its inevitable guilty verdict, Spencer will step forth to reveal the set-up and humiliate the DA. Somewhat surprisingly, Tom eagerly agrees to this subterfuge. Unfortunately, an unforeseen event renders their perfectly formed scheme useless. Beyond a Reasonable Doubt was the last American film of director Fritz Lang. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Apparently having cornered the market in white-collar crooks in 1935, Sidney Blackmer plays a shifty financier in Monogram's The Great God Gold. Blackmer is cast as John Hart, a "receivership representative" for shysters Nitto (Edwin Maxwell) and Simon (John T. Murray).

In 1935, Sidney Blackmer stars with Shirley Grey in The Girl Who Came Back. You simply must see this riveting drama about a gangster's moll as she struggles to break free of her past and find acceptance in a more respectable environment.
Sidney Blackmer ("Rosemary's Baby") is superb as the altered double. Under Haskin's astute direction, Blackmer suggests the Asian fake he really is, through a fairly subtle use of squinting and lip pursing.
