- Historical Jesus -- Writings
Both the church and academia have gotten along successfully without the historical Jesus for centuries. The historical Jesus, the human being who walked the roads of ancient Israel, gathered disciples, and was executed by the Romans, is often contrasted with the "Christ of faith," a supra-historical figure whose presence in the world enlivens and nourishes Christian communities. The latter has always been far more important for most Christians. - Da Vinci Code -- Opus Dei
The Da Vinci Code offers a surprising array of definitions of Opus Dei. The author can’t seem to make up his mind, and in the end never manages to get it right. - The Moment of Silence
The Moment of Silence is an adventure title set in the not-too-distant future (2044). The world is much like ours: people still wear clothes that wouldn't look out of place in modern-day New York City, parks are still oases of greenery amongst the concrete canyons, people still meet strangers and flirt with them in internet chat rooms, and homeless guys smelling of improperly disposed-of body fluids still rant and scream at passers-by about UFOs and the general merits of tin-foil hats. - Medieval -- Miscellaneous
As medieval knights found themselves engaged in one-on-one combat, other medieval weapons became a necessity when their medieval swords broke or were unavailable. Although medieval knights had a variety of weapons to choose from, each knight often had one or two medieval weapons he favored most. - Jesus -- Historical Jesus
While Jesus of Nazareth is the most historically accurate, other films add a bit of fiction to the life of Jesus. The idea that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute, for example, doesn't exist in the Gospels, but it's a common theme in film versions. - Torino -- Torino Games
Torino, the ancient village of Taurasia, which was destroyed by Hannibal and then rebuilt and renamed Augusta Taurinorum by the Romans, shows the traces of thousands of years of history. The periods of decadence and power have alternated in the centuries, transforming the initially small Piedmontese settlement, first into a city, then into the Capital of a kingdom, a nation, and finally of the automotive industry. Until it became the city of today. In February 2006, the Olympic games were held in Turin; this was the first time that this event was staged in such a big city. It fostered ... the image of a joyful and hospitable city, instead of the traditional cold image. Torino will be again at the centre of world attention thanks to the Universiade, recreating the festive atmosphere both in the streets of the city and in the Olympic facilities, where the opening and closing ceremonies and most of the ice skating events will take place. - Radiocarbon Dating -- Radiocarbon Dates
Radiocarbon dating is based on the continuous decay of the radioactive isotope of carbon, C-14. Radiocarbon is incorporated into all living organisms in proportion to its concentration in the environment. When an organism dies, carbon is no longer incorporated into its tissues, but the radiocarbon present continues to decay at a known rate. - Italy -- Southern Italy
Tropea, on the Calabrian coast of Italy, is the ideal departure point to visit southern Italy, Sicily or the magical Aeolian Islands, only 30 miles away. Successfully preserving its 16th century features, Tropea offers both historical and architectural delights. The new Sunsail base is located in the main marina, just an hour from the international airport. - Radiocarbon Dating -- Materials
Most archaeologists have a working knowledge of radiocarbon dating. This knowledge is less common among museum curators, conservators and preservation scientists whose collections may not be defined as archaeological, but ... contain dateable materials. The National Science Foundation-University of Arizona Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (NFS-Arizona AMS) Laboratory is the premier center for archaeological radiocarbon dating in the United States, having performed measurements on the Shroud of Turin, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Vinland Map, the Gospel of Judas, and many documents in private collections. This talk will outline how radiocarbon dating is performed using AMS, including a discussion of how 14C measurements are translated into calendar dates. Conventional applications for dating museum objects will be presented, including the dating of papyrus and parchment documents. In addition, AMS can be used to detect 20th Century forgeries of art and artifacts purportedly created before 1955 based on the detection of atomic bomb-derived 14C, which can, in some cases, date objects at plus or minus one year's resolution. - Knights Templar -- Holy Grail
The Knights Templar were a powerful and secretive group of warrior monks during the Middle Ages. Their secrecy has given birth to endless legends, including one that they guard the Holy Grail.
