Shreveport (top left), on the Red River, is west of Monroe, northwest of Alexandria and Baton Rouge. Note highways also connect to Bossier City, Natchitoches, Tullos, Minden, Ruston, Bastrop, and Tallulah. During the U.S. Civil War, Shreveport was capital of Louisiana (1863-1865). The city was a Confederate stronghold and was the site of the headquarters of the Trans-Mississippi Department of the Confederate Army. Isolated from events in the east, the Civil War continued in the Trans-Mississippi theater for several weeks after Robert E. Lee's surrender in April 1865, and the Trans-Mississippi was the last Confederate Command to surrender (May 26, 1865). Confederate President Jefferson Davis attempted to flee to Shreveport when he left Richmond but was captured in Georgia en route.

Shreveport, and its smaller sister city, Bossier City (founded in 1884 and incorporated in 1907) together have six historic districts and many landmarks listed on the National Register. In fact, Shreveport is second only to New Orleans among Louisiana cities with multiple historic landmarks. One of these is the McNeill Street Pumping Station, an 1887 waterworks plant that is still in use and is the unique example of its type in the nation. It is listed on the National Historic Landmarks list, the highest level of national historical designation. Also located in metro Shreveport is Barksdale Air Force Base, the largest bomb base in the world, which opened in 1933 as Barksdale Army Air Field. It is ... a national landmark.
Shreveport was founded in 1836 by the Shreve Town Company, a corporation established to develop a town located at the junction of the Red River and the Texas Trail. The Trail had long established itself as a prime overland route into the newly independent Republic of Texas and, before that, into Mexico. The River had recently been cleared of 180 miles of debris clogging its channel, thanks to the efforts of Captain Henry Miller Shreve, commander of the US Army Corps of Engineers. In honor of Shreve, the newly-formed village was named Shreve Town, and in 1839 the village was incorporated as the town of Shreveport. In 1871 Shreveport became incorporated as a city. During part of the twentieth century, Shreveport became a prime force in the oil industry but by the 1980s, the industry suffered large economic setbacks and Shreveport felt the effects of this recession when it saw many of its companies institute cutbacks and layoffs or completely fold.
American Association Shreveport Sports righthanded pitcher Colby Miller has been sold to the Florida Marlins and will report to the Marlins spring training camp in February. Although Miller only posted a 6-9 record last season with the Sports, at the close of the year he was considered as the best pitcher on the Sports staff. His ERA of 3.18 was fourth best in the American Association in 2007. In 127 1/3 innings Miller recorded 83 strikeouts and led the league with three shutouts. Miller signed with the Sports last year after spending seven seasons in the Minnesota Twins farm system. The 25-year old righthander, a native of Weatherford, OK, was a third round draft pick of the Twins in 2007.
