   The Byzantine Empire or Eastern Roman Empire was the eastern section of the Roman Empire which remained in existence after the fall of the western section. The life of the empire is commonly considered to span AD 395 to 1453. During the thousand years of its existence, it was known simply as the "Roman Empire." The Byzantines considered themselves to be Romans (Rhomaioi) and the legitimate continuation of the Roman Empire. Even though much of its, language, and culture was Greek, this posed no contradiction for the Romans of the Eastern Empire. Greek had been their language, and their culture had been Hellenistic for centuries.

   At the time of its destruction, in the first century, Pompeii was a middle-class, provincial Roman town and a prosperous commercial center. About 20,000 people, including all social classes and slaves, lived in Pompeii.

6. Empire State Building
   The Empire State Building is one of the well known symbols in American history and gives a unique perspective of the society that it represents. William Lamb, an architect of great fame was appointed to plan and design this building. The construction started in June 1930 and was completed by November. The tower was around 200ft high with a dome on its top. By October 3rd, 1930, the 88th floor was almost complete. In order to speed up the construction the building's posts, beams, windows and window frames were manufactured in the steel factories and put together in the site of the building itself.
7. Gracie Fields -- British Empire
   The strength of Gracie Fields' superb soprano voice transported the actress and singer from her humble start in a small Lancashire backstreet to her position many years later as a Dame of the British Empire. Born in 1898 above a shop in the town of Rochdale, her 60 years in music and movies survived the war years and a batch of related negative publicity, a battle against cancer of the cervix, and three husbands.
