Shopping Carts: Children
built 632 days ago
During a report on the shopping cart recommendations Monday, The Early Show medical correspondent Dr. Emily Senay told of a new study from the American Academy of Pediatrics highlighting another danger to children: escalators. From 1990 to 2002, about 2,000 kids a year were injured on escalators, with the majority under five-years-old. The most common injuries were lacerations after getting caught in the escalator after a fall. Many of the injuries involved strollers. The researchers say parents should always supervise children on escalators, and never take kids in strollers onto them. Be mindful of youngsters getting tangled in the spaces at the top or bottom of escalators, or along the sides.

Parents on a daily basis put their children in shopping cart seats while shopping at the drugstore or grocery shopping without thinking there is any risk. An estimated 24,000 children were treated in hospitals for shopping cart-related injuries in 2005 that included bruises, bumps and fatalities. On August 7, 2006, many of the top pediatricians throughout the United States warned parents against putting children in shopping carts.

Children should not be left unattended or allowed to stand up in shopping carts, and shouldn't be allowed to ride in the main grocery basket of the cart or on the outside, the policy says. Seat-belts and other restraints should be worn at all times in the cart, it advises.

Each year, more than 23,000 children ages 14 and under are treated for injuries related to shopping carts. Sixty percent of these injuries are from falls, which occur because children ages 5 and under are unrestrained. Seventy-four percent of these injuries are to the head and neck.

Of the 24,200 children treated last year in U.S. emergency rooms for shopping-cart-related injuries, 74 percent suffered head and neck injuries. Eighty-five percent of the children were under 5, and 4 percent were injured seriously enough to be admitted to the hospital, according to the academy.
