Shopping cart-related injuries are common: In 2005, more than 24,000 kids were treated in emergency rooms for these types of injuries, according to the AAP. Most of the injuries occurred when a child fell from the shopping cart, the cart tipped over, the child became entrapped in the cart, or the child fell while riding on the outside of the cart.

According to the academy, about 23,000 U.S. children are treated in emergency rooms for shopping cart-related injuries each year. Last year the total was about 24,200, including 20,700 injuries in children younger than 5.

Of all the things parents worry about, a child taking a nosedive off a shopping cart and suffering a concussion or fractured skull has to be near the bottom of the list. But it may happen more often than you think.
