Shopko Stores, Inc. announced Friday it signed a merger agreement with Badger Holding, Inc., in an effort to improve the big-box retailer’s economic fortunes. Badger Holding, an affiliate Goldner Hawn Johnson & Morrison Incorporated, is a Minneapolis-based private equity investment firm. The business deal is valued at a little over $1 billion, including a $330 million debt.
ShopKo, widely recognized for its innovative use of information technology, will use the Spotlight Rapid Results program to quickly implement the Markdown Optimizer. The initial pilot will generate markdowns in selected apparel, hardline, and home categories during the 2nd half of 2000. Upon successful completion of this initial phase, the retailer plans to further deploy the application across virtually every category in 2001.
Laucks came to ShopKo in 1981 as director of loss prevention, and was promoted to vice president of loss prevention in 1989. His career at ShopKo has featured many highlights. In 1986, he was influential in the enactment of Wisconsin's retail theft civil recovery law, and he designed and implemented ShopKo's in-house theft recovery program. The program has returned $5.6 million to ShopKo stores, including $1.1 million last year.

MacDonald said ShopKo has looked at the possibility of building a store at the Pabst Farms development in the Oconomowoc area, which includes a planned enclosed regional mall and an adjoining area designated for big box retailers. General Growth Properties Inc. of Chicago, the developer, recently received approval from Oconomowoc for the plans for the center.
