In addition to those locations, ShopKo has purchased what Mike Bettiga, senior vice president of retail health and general merchandise manager, calls "a vibrant independent" drug store, Port Apothecary, in Port Washington, Wis., approximately 20 miles north of Milwaukee. Beginning in October, the pharmacy / retail store will be remodeled completely and will De converted to the ShopKo Express format. The store will remain open to customers during the remodeling period.

Now Shopko offers its customer base a pharmaceutical department and a center for eye care. Though the merger is a billion-dollar transaction, Vigeland said ShopKo employees and customers will not see much of a difference in the way ShopKo operates. No layoffs or store closings are anticipated because of the merger.
