Ships are measured in terms of overall length, length along the waterline, beam (breadth) and tonnage. There are a number of different tonnage definitions, the majority of which are measures of volume rather than displacement. Displacement is most frequently applied to naval vessels and is equal to the actual weight of a ship under specific conditions. "Light ship" tonnage is the actual weight of the ship with no fuel, no persons, no cargo, no water on board, just as it first entered the water. The term "displacement" is used because of the basic physical law, discovered by Archimedes, that the weight of a floating object is exactly that of the weight of the water that would otherwise be in the "hole in the water" created by the ship.

Ships may occur collectively as fleets, squadrons, flotillas, or convoys. A collection of ships for military purposes may compose a navy, task force, or an armada. In the past, people counting or grouping disparate types of ship may refer to the individual vessels as bottoms, but this generally refers only to merchant vessels. Groups of sailing ships could constitute a fleet of ___ sail (e.g., "a fleet of 40 sail"). Groups of submarines (particularly German U-boats in the 1940s) formerly hunted in wolf packs.

The beautiful Bolama beach in the West African country of Guinea Bissau may soon turn into a scrapyard for old toxic ships, threatening nature and the lives of local people. The beach is part of the Bijagos Archipelagos, classified as a Biosphere Reserve by United Nations (Unesco). Help to save the Bolama beach! Let the United Nations know they should protect the nature and people of Guinea Bissau. As a result of the first thousands of e-mails from all over the world, Unesco has already sent a research mission to Bolama to assess the situation. But continued pressure is necessary to make sure that Unesco takes effective measures to protect Bolama Beach.

In August 2006, NASSCO received a $1 billion contract from U.S. Shipping Partners to build nine ships. The ships will be double-hulled, 183 meters (600.4 feet) in length and displace 49,000 dead weight tons. With a cargo capacity of about 331,000 barrels, the ships are designed to carry petroleum and chemical products in Jones Act trade between U.S. ports.

The following is an alphabetical list of US Navy ships. Ships which are named after individuals are listed by the first name of the individual. For example, USS John F. Kennedy is listed under "J" rather than "K". To view a particular ship, select the first letter of the ship's name.

Norovirus stomach flu is commonly contracted on cruise ships, in schools, workplaces and hospitals. It can be life-threatening to infants, seniors or those with weakened immune systems. The U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) research on a 2007 norovirus outbreak at an elementary school revealed computer keyboards and mice were a source of transmission.
