Adelson is well-known to computer people as the man who developed the computer trade show Comdex, which resembles the CES extravaganza in many respects. Adelson sold the show along with other assets to Japan's Softbank in 1995 for about $800 million, according to media reports at the time.

Not surprisingly, Adelson has many fans on Wall Street. "There isn't a shadow of doubt that he is a visionary," said Grant Chum, the executive director of Asian conglomerates and gambling equity research at UBS. "He thinks big, and he's been the boldest of the foreign players, being right in from the start. This has let him reap huge benefits.

Before that, Adelson managed a computer journal, the Datacom User that he utilized to help feature his Interface Group trade show operation. Mirage Resorts Chief Financial Officer Dan Lee ... was the target of Adelson's ire. He charged that Lee had been trashing the progress of The Venetian in talks with bondholders of the project. Mirage Resorts is building the $1.6 billion Bellagio on the opposite side of Las Vegas Boulevard, about one-half mile south of The Venetian. The two competitors will target many of the same upscale tourists.
