Sheldon Adelson: Israel Hayom
built 633 days ago
In 2007, Adelson made an unsuccessful bid to buy controlling interest in the Israeli newspaper Maariv. When this failed, he proceeded with parallel plans to publish a free daily newspaper to compete with Israeli, a newspaper he had co-founded in 2006 but had left. [6] The first edition of the new newspaper, Israel HaYom, was published on July 30, 2007.
Adelson and Hananel enjoyed a social friendship prior to their decision to become involved in business together. In late 2005, Hananel became aware that IPI's General Manager in Israel would be vacating that position and he expressed interest in the job. According to the facts alleged in the complaint, on December 5, 1995, Adelson, Hananel, and IPI's General Counsel, Paul Roberts, met in IPI's office in Needham and formally agreed that Hananel would become a full-time employee of IPI.
All this wealth has fueled Adelson's political and philanthropic projects. He gave Holocaust history group Yad Vashem $25 million in 2006, and this past summer fronted a rumored $180 million to launch Yisrael Hayom, a free daily newspaper based in Tel Aviv. Along with his wife Miriam, an Israeli-born physician, he ... set up a charitable foundation to distribute $200 million annually to causes including Taglit-Birthright Israel, which introduces young Jews to the homeland via all-expense-paid trips. Sources say Adelson is a key backer of an American Israel Public Affairs Committee offshoot that organizes similar trips for legislators. Steve Grossman, a longtime friend who has helmed both the Democratic National Committee and aipac, recruited Adelson as an aipac donor in the 1980s and says the casino magnate is an "ardent supporter" of Likud Party chairman Benjamin Netanyahu.

A student shares his Taglit-Birthright Israel experience with Sheldon Adelson. Adelson related the story to Hillel students who were participating in the Taglit program from Indiana University, Canada and Broward and Palm Beach (Florida) at Tel Aviv's Independence Hall. He explained that he decided to support the Taglit program so that his own young children would not have to miss a Taglit trip by being put on a "waiting list." Hillel is bringing 3,000 students to Israel this winter through Taglit.

Last month, the Adelson Family Charitable Foundation was organized to award grants to Jewish philanthropies. Michael Bohnen , a longtime corporate attorney at Nutter, McLennan & Fish, left his job to become president of the foundation in Natick. Media reports in Israel and elsewhere said the foundation intended to give away $200 million a year, but Bohnen declined to comment on any target.
